MBABANE – The much-anticipated Mbabane Crossover Show was unfortunately cancelled due to unforeseen heavy rains that disrupted event preparations and raised safety concerns.
The event, which aimed to raise funds for elderly residents in Mbabane, had started on a high note with a lively session of Shukuma exercises. Led by renowned South African fitness enthusiast Nkululeko “King of Squats” Dlamini, the fitness activity attracted a large crowd, including ministers, Members of Parliament, and business leaders. The vibrant atmosphere gave hope for an exciting day ahead.
However, the situation took a turn for the worse as heavy rains suddenly began to pour down, causing significant damage to the stage and sound equipment. With the weather worsening, the venue was deemed unsafe for the continuation of the event. Popular performers such as Mduduzi Ncube and Sipho Makhabane had already arrived and were prepared to take the stage, but the severe weather made it impossible for them to perform.
Despite efforts to salvage the event, the sound engineer advised that the show should not proceed due to the risks posed by waterlogged equipment and exposed cables. The event was ultimately called off, much to the disappointment of attendees.
Philani Maswati Charity Organization Chairperson Lutfo Dlamini expressed regret over the cancellation, offering sincere apologies to all stakeholders, sponsors, and ticket holders. In his statement, Dlamini acknowledged the unexpected nature of the weather event, which had not been predicted when the event was initially planned. “We suffered yet another climate change consequence. When we planned this event about three months ago, the weather forecast indicated a very rain-free 31st. As of last week, it only showed drizzle at midnight, and then today, boom, a countrywide heavy storm,” he said.
Dlamini further assured the public that despite the setback, the organization remained committed to supporting the elderly and vulnerable members of the community. “While this setback has affected our fundraising efforts, we remain steadfast in our mission and will explore alternative avenues to support those in need,” he said. “We are already planning future events that will ensure our charitable objectives are met.”
The sound system for the event had been generously sponsored by Taste of Africa, who also supported the decision to cancel the event after consulting with the sound engineers. Dlamini expressed regret over the losses incurred due to the cancellation but reiterated that the charity’s commitment to helping the elderly remained unwavering.
The Philani Maswati Charity Organization extended its gratitude to all its supporters and partners and assured the public that future events would continue to advance its charitable goals.
