MBABANE – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is full of praise for Eswatini’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
This is contained in the IMF report for 2024 on Eswatini. The report states that the ACC has improved a lot in dealing with corruption in the country. However, the report states that even if that is the case, there is a lot of work to be done by the ACC in uprooting corruption in the country.
The report also highlights that fighting corruption is good for the country, as it opens opportunities for investors to invest in the country, resulting in a number of jobs being created to alleviate unemployment. It is for that reason why the IMF calls upon Government and other relevant stakeholders to ensure they support the ACC with the resources it needs to continue with its mandate.
ACC Spokesperson Jabu Phakathi promises that the nation will soon take note of the work done by the ACC. Speaking to Eswatini TV, Phakathi said there were changes that were made within the ACC that were meant to bring improvements to the ACC.
“We are very happy and excited that the IMF has recognised our efforts as we work hard to fulfill our mandate with expectations. As a commission, we are implementing strategies that we have used before, and we believe this will lead to different results,” Phakathi said.
Adding, the ACC mouthpiece said their job had been easier since Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini launched the Anti-Corruption Task Team to combat corruption, which greatly supported them.
Phakathi said they were grateful to the task team as it was of great help, as it supported in handling high profile cases and all involved offices are contributing with high efforts. The task team was launched by the prime minister in February this year, a few days after the opening of the First Session of the 12th Parliament by His Majesty King Mswati III. It has also been reported that the ACC is investigating about 250 cases and two arrests had been made so far.
