MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III has lauded the growing participation in the annual Incwala Ceremony, expressing his admiration for the dedication shown by Emaswati in preserving this significant cultural tradition.
Speaking on Saturday, January 4, 2024, at the dispersal of Emabutfo (warriors) at Ngabezweni Royal Residence, the king noted a marked increase in attendance compared to the previous year. His Majesty commended Emaswati for their commitment to the event, emphasizing that such unity is essential for the strength and cohesion of the nation. He urged that the tradition be upheld for generations, as it serves as a vital pillar of cultural identity and national solidarity.
The king acknowledged the collective efforts of Emabutfo, who play a critical role in preparing the Royal fields as part of the ceremony. While modern agricultural technology could simplify the task, His Majesty pointed out that relying on machinery would detract from the unity and teamwork fostered by this communal labor. He stressed that the physical work carried out during the Incwala reinforces shared responsibility and cooperation among Emaswati.
Rainfall during the ceremony was highlighted as a significant blessing, which the king attributed to divine and ancestral approval of the nation’s efforts to preserve this cherished custom. He remarked that the rain would contribute to the quality of the crops in the Royal fields, further underscoring the connection between cultural observance and agricultural success.
His Majesty also praised the determination and perseverance of Ingaja, who were responsible for cutting and delivering Lusekwane (sacred shrubs). The king noted the exceptional quality of the shrubs and commended Ingaja for their resilience throughout the challenging task. He encouraged them to apply the same spirit of diligence and respect to other areas of life, viewing difficulties as opportunities for growth and learning.
Concluding his remarks, the king expressed pride in the collective effort and urged Emabutfo and all Emaswati to continue demonstrating the unity, respect, and hard work that define the spirit of Incwala. By doing so, he said, they ensure the tradition remains a cornerstone of the nation’s identity and strength.
This year’s Incwala was a resounding success, underscoring its importance as a unifying cultural event.
