LOBAMBA – In a remarkable show of solidarity and respect for Eswatini’s cultural heritage, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Eswatini, Liang, led a 25-member Taiwan regiment in the Incwala March. The group joined Eswatini’s warriors and Ingatja (young men) on their symbolic journey from the Ngabezweni Royal Residence to Esikhaleni Selusekwane to cut the sacred lusekwane shrub.
Covering over 50 kilometers on foot, the Taiwan team displayed exceptional determination and energy. Marching with smiles, they danced and sang alongside the warriors, embracing the event’s spirit of unity and cultural pride.
Reflecting on the experience, Ambassador Liang shared his enthusiasm:
“It was an incredible honor to march alongside the warriors and Ingatja. The energy, songs, and shared camaraderie during this sacred journey were truly inspiring. Walking more than 50 kilometers was no small feat, but the spirit of unity and dedication kept us motivated. We were thrilled to fully immerse ourselves in this beautiful tradition.”
The Incwala ceremony, regarded as Eswatini’s most sacred event, symbolizes the renewal of the nation’s strength and kingship. At its core is the cutting of the lusekwane shrub, a ritual performed by warriors and young men as a demonstration of loyalty, endurance, and unity. Beyond its physical demands, the journey holds deep spiritual significance, reinforcing the bond between the monarchy, the people, and their cultural identity.
Ambassador Liang also expressed excitement for the upcoming main Incwala ceremony at Ludzidzini Royal Residence.
“We are eagerly looking forward to joining the dances tomorrow. It will be a great opportunity to celebrate alongside our Swazi brothers and sisters and deepen our understanding of Eswatini’s vibrant heritage,” he said.
The Taiwan Embassy’s active participation in the Incwala tradition highlights its deep respect for Eswatini’s culture and strengthens the growing bonds between the two nations. Observers praised the Taiwan team for their commitment, resilience, and joyful spirit, calling their involvement a powerful symbol of friendship and cultural solidarity.
The Embassy emphasized that such cultural exchanges are vital for fostering mutual respect, understanding, and strengthening bilateral ties between Taiwan and Eswatini. Their participation in the Incwala March exemplifies a shared sense of unity and dedication to preserving cultural traditions.
