ESWATINI PRIORITSING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

SIMUNYE– The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy Eswatini is taking significant steps in promoting sustainable development and addressing current challenges surrounding energy security and environmental protection.

This was shown through the workshop held by the Ministry at Simunye Country Club where the ministry together with the Portfolio Committees of Houses of Parliament discussed strategies for sustainable development in Eswatini.

In his opening remarks, the Honourable Minister HRH Prince Lonkhokhela emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to improving the lives of Emaswati through sustainable development initiatives. He outlined key areas of focus, including:

• Improving energy security and access through increased local electricity generation and rural electrification programs.

• Facilitating access to clean water and sanitation through rehabilitation and construction of water schemes.

• Strengthening river basin authorities through improved water resource management.

• Developing large water infrastructure projects.

• Reforming the mines and minerals sector to attract reputable investors and improve mining operations.

The Minister also announced that the Ministry has initiated the process of amending or passing regulations into legislation, particularly for the Petroleum Regulations. This step is crucial for creating a conducive environment for investment and promoting sustainable energy development.

The workshop provided a valuable platform for the Ministry and the Portfolio Committees to engage in meaningful discussions and gather input on the Ministry’s initiatives. Representatives of parastatals presented on key policy areas and ongoing initiatives, focusing on topics such as energy security, clean water and sanitation, petroleum sector and regulations update.

On another note, Minister HRH Prince Lonkhokhela and other key stakeholders today (October 23, 2024) attended a National Groundwater Stakeholder Conference that is focused on the crucial theme of “Enhancing Water Access Through Sustainable Groundwater Resources Development and Management.”

This conference is organized by the Department of Water Affairs in partnership with the SADC – GrounSADC – Groundwater Management Institute the conference aims to empower the National Focal Group on Groundwater (NFG) in their critical role in advocating for and advising on groundwater-related matters.
