MBABANE – The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini has announced, with great pride, the election of former Cabinet Minister Moses Vilakati as the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE) in the African Union Commission. This appointment, secured through a landslide victory at the 38th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marks a significant milestone for Eswatini on the continental stage.

Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo hailed Vilakati’s appointment as a historic achievement, positioning Eswatini at the forefront of leadership in key developmental sectors across Africa. “His election is a testament to his extensive expertise, unwavering commitment, and remarkable leadership in agriculture, environmental conservation, and sustainable tourism,” said Nxumalo in an official statement.

Vilakati’s academic and professional credentials underline his suitability for the role. He holds an MSc in Agriculture (International Development) from California Polytechnic State University, USA, and a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Eswatini. His career spans several leadership positions, including serving as Minister of Agriculture in 2013 and later as Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs from 2018 to 2023. He has also held roles such as Project Director at the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) and Lecturer at the University of Eswatini.

With a vision aligned with Africa’s agenda for food security, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience, Vilakati is expected to bring transformative leadership to his new role. His Majesty’s Government expressed confidence in his ability to uphold professionalism and integrity at the African Union, ensuring progress in agricultural innovation and rural development across the continent.

The Government also extended its gratitude to the 36 African nations that backed Vilakati’s candidacy, acknowledging their trust in Eswatini’s leadership. “His success is a national triumph, and the people of Eswatini stand firmly behind him as he embarks on this remarkable journey of service to Africa,” the statement concluded.

Vilakati’s appointment not only elevates Eswatini’s standing in African governance but also offers hope for enhanced regional cooperation in key sectors that drive sustainable development and economic growth.
