MTN CELEBRATES NEXT STEM GEN GRADUATES, CHAMPIONS WOMEN IN TECH

MBABANE – MTN Next STEM Gen programme recently celebrated another cohort of bright young minds who have successfully completed this rigorous initiative. The event, which marked a significant milestone in advancing STEM education in Eswatini

MTN Eswatini CEO, Wandile Mtshali, applauded the four graduates of the 2024 Next STEM Gen programme during a celebratory event today, emphasising the company’s commitment to gender equality and the crucial role of women in technology. This marks the second cohort to complete the programme, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to nine since its launch in 2023.

A core focus of the Next STEM Gen programme is empowering women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Mtshali highlighted MTN’s dedication to creating a more diverse workforce and fostering inclusivity.

“This programme has a particular emphasis on women because we aim for a more diverse workforce, and we believe in taking the necessary actions towards achieving inclusivity and diversity,” he explained. He cited the programme as a prime example of MTN’s commitment to cultivating a future pipeline of women in STEM.

Recognising the vital role of technology in Eswatini’s economic development, Mtshali emphasised the importance of capacitating women in STEM to become key players in the nation’s progress. He encouraged the graduates to consider MTN’s Graduate in Training opportunities, citing the success of the first cohort, where two out of five participants were absorbed into the company ,Tifeziwe Dlamini in Marketing and Sinenkosi Khumalo in Fintech.

“Technology and networks are the lifeblood of our business and imperative for our growth,” Mtshali asserted, underscoring the need for young, innovative minds in STEM. He expressed confidence that the programme had prepared the graduates for the professional world and the MTN ecosystem.

Lindani Dlamini, Chief Technology and Information Officer at MTN Eswatini, who was represented by Sihle Mahlalela, Senior Manager Network Operations, praised the participants for their remarkable achievement.

He recognised the dedication and perseverance exhibited by the young women, balancing their academic coursework while excelling in this intensive programme.

Mahlalela urged the graduates to see themselves as more than just learners, but as catalysts for change in Eswatini.

“As you continue learning, remember that you are not just recipients of knowledge; you are also drivers of change. Eswatini needs innovative thinkers like yourselves who can leverage technology to address our country’s challenges.” he said.

He stressed that the skills acquired during the programme are essential tools for shaping impactful solutions. The innovative projects and solutions developed during the programme underscore their potential as future STEM leaders.

He urged them to share their experiences, inspiring the next generation by demonstrating what is possible when passion aligns with opportunity. Through mentorship and storytelling, they can ignite curiosity and ambition in others who aspire to pursue STEM careers.

MTN Eswatini remains dedicated to fostering an environment where talent can thrive. The company’s partnership with educational institutions is a testament to its belief in nurturing local talent.

Mahlalela encouraged them to use their skills to develop sustainable technologies, enhance digital infrastructure, and create solutions that can drive growth across various sectors.

Tifeziwe Dlamini, a proud alumna of the Next STEM Gen programme, reflected on how the programme has shaped her journey and empowered her to pursue a career in STEM.

“Being part of the Next STEM Gen programme was a transformative experience. It has opened doors I never thought possible and gave me the confidence to push boundaries in technology. To the new graduates this is just the beginning. Take what you have learned and use it to create real impact. You are the future of STEM in Eswatini!” Dlamini said.

Speaking on behalf of the Class of 2024, Temakholo Mastebula expressed gratitude for the life-changing opportunity the programme provided and shared her aspirations for the future.

“This journey has been challenging yet incredibly rewarding. The Next STEM Gen programme has given us not just technical skills, but also the confidence to innovate, lead, and make a difference in our communities. We are deeply grateful to MTN Eswatini and our mentors for believing in us and investing in our future. As graduates, we are ready to take on the world and use technology to create solutions that will shape a better Eswatini.”

Dr. Mzabalazo Lupupa, a lecturer at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), emphasised the importance of programmes like Next STEM Gen in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical industry experience.

He shared that as an educator he has seen firsthand the impact of equipping young minds with relevant STEM skills. This programme is a crucial stepping stone in preparing students to meet real-world challenges with innovative solutions. The collaboration between academia and industry ensures that our graduates are not only knowledgeable but also prepared to be problem solvers in the workforce.
