HLATIKHULU – The opening of a new Shoprite store in Hlatikhulu has brought a significant boost to local employment, with 31 direct jobs created for community members.
This development is part of Shoprite’s growing presence in the Shiselweni Region, where the retail giant now provides approximately 500 jobs across five stores.
Officiating the launch, Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, emphasized the importance of job creation in driving economic development and improving livelihoods. He commended Shoprite for its continued investment in Eswatini and for prioritizing local employment opportunities.
“Job creation is a critical pillar in our national development agenda, and we are pleased to see companies like Shoprite making a tangible impact in our communities,” said Khumalo.
Boost for local farmers
Beyond employment, Shoprite’s expansion is strengthening Eswatini’s agricultural sector by creating a reliable market for small-scale farmers. Currently, 55 local farmers supply fresh produce, fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers to Shoprite stores across the region.
Through this partnership, these farmers receive guidance on seasonal crop selection and supply volumes, helping them maximize production and meet consistent demand. This initiative ensures sustainable incomes for farmers while improving access to fresh, locally sourced food for consumers.
Commitment to Growth
Minister Khumalo reiterated the Eswatini Government’s commitment to supporting businesses and fostering an environment where companies can thrive. He encouraged continued collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders to stimulate investment, job creation, and entrepreneurship.
He also revealed that Shoprite has plans for further expansion in the region, which will result in even more job opportunities and increased business for local suppliers.
“Every new store means more employment, more opportunities for local farmers, and a stronger economy,” the Minister noted.
The opening of Shoprite Hlatikhulu is a step forward in Eswatini’s journey toward economic empowerment and sustainable development, proving that strategic investments can transform communities.
