EU PLEDGES SUPPORT TO GOVERNMENT’S PROGRAM OF ACTION

 MBABANE – The European Union (EU) has pledged its unwavering support for the Government’s Programme of Action (PoA) through its Global Gateway Initiative, a financing model designed to support mega infrastructure projects.

In addition, the EU will assist Eswatini in developing a mineral beneficiation strategy aimed at enhancing value addition in the mining sector. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini shared this development on February 25, 2025, at King Mswati III International Airport, upon his return from Brussels, Belgium.

High-Level Meetings with the EU

The Eswatini Embassy facilitated a series of high-level meetings with key EU representatives, providing a platform to discuss critical issues such as:

  • Eswatini’s Tinkhundla System of Democracy,
  • The Sibaya People’s Parliament, and
  • The Nation’s Programme of Action 2024/25 – 2028/29.

Eswatini and the EU have fostered robust bilateral relations for over 50 years, encompassing national development, education, trade, and constitutional reform. These engagements have promoted inclusive governance, enhancing citizen participation and representation.During the visit, Prime Minister Dlamini engaged with H.E. Antonella Sberna, Vice President of the European Parliament. Discussions included governance and human rights issues. The PM also met:

  • E. Nicola Bellomo, former EU Ambassador to Eswatini,
  • Koen Doens, Director General of the European Commission, and
  • Diedereck Zambon, a senior official from the European Investment Bank.

Showcasing Eswatini’s Handcrafts

The Prime Minister expressed pride in seeing Eswatini’s locally made handcrafts displayed for sale in Brussels. These products, primarily crafted by women, highlight the creativity and skill of Eswatini’s artisans. This recognition underscores the global potential of the handicraft sector, an area the country must fully leverage.

Engagements in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the Prime Minister met with H.E. Fernando Arias, Director General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and his deputy. The PM commended the OPCW for its dedication to ensuring chemical substances are exclusively used for peaceful purposes, aligning with global safety and security goals.

Participation in the Global Council for Political Renewal

The Prime Minister also attended the 3rd Annual Meeting of the Global Council for Political Renewal (GCPR), where he delivered a keynote address. He emphasized the importance of embracing diverse democratic systems and elaborated on Eswatini’s Tinkhundla system. The PM highlighted Eswatini’s commitment to ethical governance, justice, and peace, resonating with the conference’s central theme.

Eswatini’s Role in the OACPS

Concluding the trip, the PM engaged with Mr. Junior Lodge, Assistant Secretary General of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS). Eswatini has recently assumed the presidency of the OACPS, with Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Pholile Shakantu, elected as President—a significant achievement that positions Eswatini as a growing influence on the international stage.

Reflections on the Visit

Reflecting on the diplomatic engagements, Prime Minister Dlamini noted that Eswatini’s global voice is strengthening. He emphasized the need to continue fostering strategic partnerships to advance national interests and promote sustainable growth.Dlamini departed for Brussels on February 18, 2025, and returned on February 25, 2025. His visit coincided with the 3rd Annual Global Council for Political Renewal (GCPR).

Eswatini’s growing prominence in global diplomatic and developmental spheres reflects the country’s commitment to building partnerships that align with its developmental goals and governance principles.
