MBABANE – Meet the multi-talented First Prince of Mr Eswatini!
Msimisi Dlamini, also known as Captain Siri (28), is a name and face many will recognize. He was crowned First Prince of Mr Eswatini in December 2023 at Happy Valley Hotel. However, beyond his royal title in the pageant world, Msimisi is also an actor and model.
I recently ran into him at the Isitha – The Enemy auditions at the Manzini Arts and Culture Centre, where I discovered his passion for acting. We caught up with him to learn more about his journey, career aspirations, and dreams for the future.
Getting to Know Msimisi
Where are you from?
I was born in Mbabane, but I currently reside in Ezulwini, which is home for me.
Where did you attend high school and university?
I attended St. Christopher’s High School in Luyengo. For my tertiary education, I studied Carpentry at a Vocational and Commercial Institution.
A Passion for Acting
Tell us more about your acting career.
I am deeply passionate about acting and business. My dream has always been to tell compelling stories on television and in film. I love transforming into different characters, which is why I pursued diverse forms of modeling under Rhythm Modelling Agency—I didn’t want to limit myself to just one artistic discipline.
I also developed a love for business at a young age. I used to sell different items for pocket money, and with my family having a strong entrepreneurial background, my passion for business never faded.
How was your experience auditioning for Isitha – The Enemy?
It was an exciting opportunity! They say the more chances you take, the higher your chances of success. The auditions were a great experience, especially having the opportunity to perform in front of renowned South African directors like Mandla N and legendary actor Sello Ka Make Ncube.
A Western actor once said, “After an audition, don’t expect to get the job, just be happy that you got the opportunity to act. Getting the job is a bonus.” I live by that quote to keep myself grounded and motivated, even if I don’t get a callback.
What roles have you played before?
I had a cameo role in Swazi Gold, a production by Tribe Studios. I was also an extra in a short film titled Mahlaba the Street Kid and played the lead role in another short film called Linyeva Lami.
Eswatini’s Film Industry
What are your thoughts on the local film industry?
The industry has grown significantly over the years. Creatives have worked hard to elevate Eswatini’s film scene. Who would have thought we’d produce a major movie like Baka Ngwane? I’m incredibly proud of the talent in our country, and I believe we will continue working hard until we reach the top.
Is the Arts and Culture sector doing enough to support local actors?
Yes, they are making commendable efforts. The Ministry of Arts and Culture hosted an Arts Summit that brought South Africa’s Black Brain Pictures Production to scout talent in Eswatini. They also later hosted the Isitha auditions locally, saving us the trouble of travelling to Johannesburg. Having previously attended auditions in Johannesburg, I know how challenging it can be to cover all expenses. So, I appreciate that Eswatini is creating opportunities for local actors at home.
Life as Mr Eswatini First Prince
How has the journey been since being crowned First Prince?
It has been a humbling experience. I appreciate every Liswati who voted for me. The journey has been filled with responsibilities and increased visibility, but I have learned a lot. It has shaped me into a more responsible individual, and working alongside my colleagues and the Arts and Culture sector has been a great learning experience in leadership.
What projects have you worked on since your crowning?
We have initiated several impactful projects, including:
- Donating food to care schools for underprivileged children.
- Teaching children how to grow their gardens, promoting self-sustainability.
- Donating essentials to the elderly.
- Distributing school stationery through the Mr Eswatini platform.
- Training young, aspiring models who are passionate about the industry.
The Modelling Career
Tell us more about your modelling experience.
I worked as a model under Rhythm Modelling Agency for three years before being crowned. During this time, I had the opportunity to collaborate with major brands such as EswatiniBank, MTN, Happy Valley Hotel, and Portia Mbabane Clinic, among others. I’ve been featured on billboards, video ads, and social media campaigns for these brands.
Looking Ahead
What’s next for you?
In the next five years, I see myself as an international model and actor, telling stories on major platforms like Netflix and Showmax. In 10 years, I aspire to make it to Hollywood while running several successful businesses. I believe in the power of faith, and with God, I know my dreams will come true.
