MBABANE – Meet Mabandla Bhembe the ever-charismatic voice on radio, whose journey from a passionate broadcaster to a survivor and advocate is nothing short of inspiring.

Born in Manzini and raised in Mbabane, Mabandla has transformed his experiences into a powerful message of hope and self-discovery.

Could you share a bit about your early life and education?

I was born in the late seventies in Manzini, and my family moved to Mbabane in the mid-eighties. I attended primary school there and later completed my high school at Saint Christopher. I pursued higher education in South Africa at Mlumati Technical College, studying Business Management, and later at Tshwane University of Technology, where I was awarded a Bachelor in Education and Journalism.

What inspired you to pursue a career in broadcasting?

My passion for radio began in my youth, listening to various South African stations. It ignited a love for music and the desire to become a broadcaster. I joined the industry in the late nineties as a sports presenter at TUT Campus Radio and later became a full-time radio broadcaster. My enthusiasm for sports journalism even earned me a fully sponsored three-year bursary in the UK, focusing on sports reporting.

What do you believe is the essence of being a broadcaster?

Radio is about being authentic and having the zeal to influence and shape people’s lives positively. I treat every listener equally, regardless of their interests. I didn’t join journalism to be famous; I joined to connect with people and inspire them.

What are your hopes for the future, both personally and in broadcasting?

I aim to continue using my platform to raise awareness about domestic abuse and empower others. I believe community-based radio stations are vital for our governance system. In the future, I hope to transition into the business industry while still advocating for positive change.

Any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

It’s crucial to remember that our hardships can make us stronger. We must use our experiences to fuel a mission of awareness and empathy. Life is a journey of weathering and rebuilding. Be kind to yourself as you heal, and never forget that there is a future waiting for you.

Mabandla Bhembe’s story serves as a testament to resilience, reminding us that through adversity, we can find our purpose and strength.
