BUSELENI – A life-changing sewing project is giving Buseleni residents a chance to build a better future. With sewing machines and determination, locals are mastering new skills that will help them earn a living.

The initiative, launched in March 2025 at the Umphakatsi hall, provides affordable training using donated sewing machines. Supported by the region and Inkhundla yaseNkwene, the project is set to run until June 12, 2025. Participants pay E150 per month, and after three months, they will graduate with skills that can open doors to employment or entrepreneurship.

Speaking to Eswatini Positive News, the Bucopho confirmed the project’s success. “This is a great step toward self-reliance. People are learning, growing, and preparing for a brighter future,” he said.

One participant shared their excitement. “This project is more than sewing; it’s a chance to change our lives. We are gaining skills that will help us become independent and support our families.”

Another participant highlighted the convenience of learning within their community. “Since the training is in our area, we don’t have to spend money on transport or rent, which makes it affordable for us.” The project is now benefiting people from surrounding areas, including Mandulo, Mawelawela, Lakhumalo, Nyanyali, and Egugwini.

Trainer Mrs. Maseko is impressed with the trainees’ progress. “They already know how to sew a basic skirt. They are also learning body blocks, which are foundation patterns used to design different garments. By the end of the project, they will be able to sew trousers as well,” she said.

Beyond sewing, the project encourages teamwork and collaboration. Participants help each other master stitching techniques, pattern-making, and fabric handling. Some have already started making simple garments and school uniforms, with hopes of selling their products soon.

Community leaders are hopeful that this initiative will inspire more skills-based programs. “This is just the beginning. If we continue supporting such projects, we can create more job opportunities and reduce unemployment in our communities,” said a local elder.

With the project running until mid-2025, its impact is expected to grow, giving many in Buseleni and nearby areas the chance to build a brighter future.
