MBABANE – The Ministry of Health, through the  Eswatini National Nutrition Council with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Program, recently convened a high level Nutrition Multistakeholder Meeting. With backing from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF Eswatini, the meeting updated stakeholders on the Obesity Action Acceleration Road Map and laid out key activities for the coming year.

Obesity is a growing threat in Eswatini, especially among children and youth, putting thousands at risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. The WHO has identified it as a national health priority requiring urgent, coordinated intervention.

The new roadmap emphasizes promoting healthier eating habits, increasing daily physical activity, and enacting supportive policies such as taxing sugar-sweetened beverages to help reduce consumption of unhealthy products. It also supports creating environments that make healthy choices easier and more accessible for all citizens.

“This effort isn’t just about treating the disease; it’s also about prevention and empowering people to live healthier lives,” said a Ministry of Health official.

The campaign encourages individuals and families to take simple but impactful steps: eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole foods; reduce sugary and processed food intake; and stay active through walking, dancing, or other enjoyable activities. Communities are also urged to support local initiatives that promote healthy living and awareness.

Obesity not only affects personal well-being but also impacts the country’s development. A healthier population leads to lower healthcare costs, greater productivity, and improved quality of life.

Through collective action and sustained commitment, Eswatini aims to turn the tide on obesity and build a brighter and healthier future for generations to come.
