MBABANE– Minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, has encouraged graduates under the Ministry’s Women in Development Unit to embrace resilience, innovation and entrepreneurship as they enter the next chapter of their lives.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of 87 students on Friday, Minister Dlamini commended the group for investing in themselves and acquiring skills that he described as “essential for creating sustainable livelihoods.”

“Since its establishment in 1978, the Women in Development Unit has empowered over 10,000 graduates. Each one of you now joins a legacy of people who have transformed their lives through skills development. This is a powerful demonstration of our commitment to lifelong learning, which aligns directly with the Sustainable Development Goals—specifically Goal 1, which aims to eradicate poverty, and Goal 4, which champions education for all,” he said.

The Minister explained that the unit, once designed primarily to support women while their partners worked in the mines, has evolved into an inclusive programme that now welcomes men, women and the youth.

“The name ‘Women in Development’ reflects an important history. But today, it is also a symbol of social inclusion. I am proud to say that the programme has evolved with contemporary socio-economic rights. Skills like Fashion and Design, Food Processing, and Hospitality are not limited by gender—they are pathways to opportunity for everyone. I encourage more men to follow the example of those graduating today,” he added.

Turning to the new graduates, Minister Dlamini delivered a passionate message of resilience and ambition:

“Your certificates are not just pieces of paper; they are keys to a future you will build for yourselves. Think beyond finding a job—go out and create jobs. Start small, but dream big. The road ahead will be challenging, but you must be resilient. Be aggressive and innovative in the business world.”

He further urged the graduates to utilise the support structures available to them, including Community Development Officers, and to consider applying for funding from the Regional Development Fund (RDF) and other partners.

“Collaborate, innovate, and grow your businesses into successful enterprises. This is not the end of your education, but the beginning of your journey as entrepreneurs,” he concluded.

The 87 graduates, who specialised in various fields including Fashion and Design, Food Processing and Hospitality, were celebrated not only as individuals but as part of a growing movement of empowered citizens contributing to Eswatini’s development.
