LOBAMBA – The 7th edition of the Imbube Marathon was nothing short of spectacular as two local champions, Mancoba Nhlabatsi and Nelisiwe Magongo, proudly claimed the First Liswati titles in the prestigious 42km race, flying Eswatini’s flag high with their remarkable performances.

Both athletes showcased resilience, discipline, and an enduring love for the sport, earning well-deserved recognition and rewards. Magongo walked away with E35,000 for being the first Liswati woman to finish, along with a E5,000 Spar shopping voucher, while Nhlabatsi took home E15,000 for finishing second overall, E35,000 for being the first Liswati man, and an additional E5,000 Spar voucher.

For Nelisiwe Magongo, this victory marked a defining moment in her running journey. Taking part in the Imbube Marathon for the first time, she said she entered the race with modest expectations but a strong determination to challenge herself.

“I didn’t expect much; I just wanted to see how I would perform,” she said with a joyful smile. “What motivated me most is discipline. I was taught that when you start something, you must finish it — that’s why I always see myself as a starter and a finisher.”

Magongo, who recently returned to Eswatini after completing her Master’s in Public Health in India, dedicated her victory to her coaches and parents, expressing deep gratitude for their unwavering support.

“There were moments I felt like giving up, but they kept cheering me on to finish what I started,” she shared.

Meanwhile, Mancoba Nhlabatsi, the defending Imbube Marathon champion, once again proved his consistency and talent by finishing second overall while maintaining his title as First Liswati male finisher. Though he narrowly missed reclaiming the overall top spot, his spirit remained unshaken.

“Even though I hoped for first place, I’m happy with the results,” he said proudly. “I want to thank my coaches, parents, and all the EmaSwati who cheered me from start to finish. I felt like we were all from Lobamba!” he added with a warm laugh, referring to the overwhelming local support that filled Somhlolo National Stadium.

For Nhlabatsi, the race was more than a competition — it was a celebration of community and perseverance. As last year’s overall winner, his strong finish this year reinforced his position as one of Eswatini’s top marathoners.

The achievements of both Nhlabatsi and Magongo stand as a testament to Eswatini’s growing strength in athletics. Their inspiring stories of focus, faith, and endurance embody the true spirit of the Imbube Marathon — a race that continues to unite runners through the shared values of discipline, health, and cultural pride.

As the cheers echoed through Somhlolo National Stadium, one thing became clear: the flame of the Imbube Marathon burns brighter than ever — fuelled by champions like Mancoba Nhlabatsi and Nelisiwe Magongo, who continue to inspire the next generation of EmaSwati runners.
