MATSAPHA – Firefighters in Eswatini have successfully reduced veld fire incidents by 40 per cent this past winter compared to 2024, thanks to enhanced prevention efforts and public education campaigns.
This was revealed by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Appolo Maphalala, during the second edition of the Eswatini National Fire Day, held at Matsapha International Airport on Friday, 24 October 2025. The event was graced by His Majesty King Mswati III, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services (ENFRES).
Minister Maphalala, who oversees the department responsible for firefighting services, praised the country’s firefighters for their dedication and bravery, noting that the significant reduction in veld fires was a direct result of their proactive approach.
“Our firefighters have worked tirelessly, not only responding to fires but also preventing them,” said the minister. “They have gone out to communities to educate people about fire prevention and safety. Their efforts have clearly paid off, as we have recorded a 40 per cent decrease in veld fires compared to last year.”
He explained that ENFRES personnel had faced numerous challenges, including limited resources and an ever-growing population, which increased the demand for emergency services. Despite these constraints, the firefighters continued to serve with courage and professionalism.
The minister also highlighted the ongoing training and capacity-building initiatives within ENFRES, aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring that firefighters are well-equipped to handle both fire and rescue operations.
Minister Maphalala extended heartfelt gratitude to His Majesty the King for his unwavering support of the department, noting that the King’s presence at the event served as a powerful motivation for all firefighters.
“It is deeply encouraging to see His Majesty taking time to be with us today,” Maphalala said. “His continued support inspires our officers to serve diligently. We are also grateful for the opportunity to take part in national cultural events such as Umhlanga and Incwala, which strengthen our bond with the nation.”
During the ceremony, the minister presented five cattle to the King on behalf of ENFRES — three for His Majesty and two for Her Majesty the Indlovukazi — as a token of appreciation and respect. Additionally, Maphalala presented a replica cheque worth E60,000, which will be handed over to the Philani Mswati Charity Organisation through the Indlovukazi to support elderly citizens in need.
Meanwhile, Acting Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla informed the King that Parliament was drafting legislation aimed at strengthening ENFRES operations. She said benchmarking exercises would soon be conducted in other SADC countries and beyond, to identify best practices that could be adapted to improve service delivery in Eswatini.
“We are committed to developing policies that will make ENFRES more efficient, professional, and responsive to the needs of our people,” Dladla affirmed.
The event concluded with celebrations recognising the bravery and contribution of firefighters who continue to risk their lives to protect communities.
Their success in reducing fire incidents is being hailed as a major achievement — one that demonstrates the power of education, teamwork, and national support in safeguarding Eswatini’s environment and people.
