MANKAYANE – The Royal Eswatini Police Service has launched an intensified manhunt following two violent incidents in Mankayane, where armed suspects targeted women in separate but potentially linked attacks over the weekend.
Police confirmed they are investigating attempted murder and robbery cases that occurred in Mabovini, with preliminary findings suggesting the same group of three armed men may be responsible. Authorities have since increased patrols and deployed targeted operations in the area to track down the suspects.
In the most serious case, a 33-year-old woman from Mbutfwa was shot three times on Monday, March 23, 2026, at around 7:30pm while returning home from work. According to police, the suspects, armed with a pistol, robbed her of a mobile phone and E60 in cash before fleeing the scene. She survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.
A day earlier, on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at approximately 6:50pm, another 33-year-old woman from Mhlatane was robbed under similar circumstances. She was approached by three men, also armed with a pistol, and dispossessed of her mobile phone and cash valued at E150. She was not physically harmed during the incident.
Police believe the similarities in timing, location, and method point to a coordinated pattern, prompting urgent investigative efforts. Officers are following leads and appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying or locating the suspects.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those travelling during evening hours, to remain vigilant and avoid isolated areas where possible. They emphasised that community cooperation remains critical in ensuring swift arrests and preventing further incidents.
Despite the seriousness of the attacks, police noted that the survival of the first victim and the absence of injuries in the second case are encouraging outcomes, underscoring the importance of timely response and access to medical care.
Investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement maintaining a visible presence in Mankayane as efforts to restore public confidence and safety continue.
