MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III has directed the Government of Eswatini to identify and allocate land specifically for Azerbaijani investors to establish businesses in the Kingdom.
The initiative is expected to pave the way for the creation of an industrial hub that would enable Azerbaijani companies to set up operations in Eswatini and produce goods for both local and international markets.
The King revealed the development during a media briefing held at Ludzidzini Royal Residence on Saturday, 30 May 2026, following his return from official visits to Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Industrial park concept discussed
According to His Majesty, Azerbaijani investors expressed interest in establishing a business zone similar to an industrial park, where multiple companies could operate from a designated area.
The King said such a development would not only create economic opportunities but also improve access to quality products and services for emaSwati.
He noted that Eswatini’s preferential access to several international markets makes the country an attractive destination for foreign investors seeking to expand their operations.
“Once the land is allocated, they can establish industries and businesses that will serve both the local market and export markets,” the King said.
Inspiration from Azerbaijan’s development projects
His Majesty said the decision was influenced by the impressive projects and innovations showcased during his visit to Azerbaijan.
Among the developments that attracted attention was the Sea Breeze project, a large-scale mixed-use development located along the Caspian Sea.
The King said the delegation was impressed by the level of planning, investment and infrastructure development demonstrated by Azerbaijani businesses.
He noted that some of the projects observed could provide valuable lessons for Eswatini as it continues pursuing economic growth and improved service delivery.
“We were pleased by what we saw and the way they have implemented their projects. There is much that we can learn from them,” the King said.
Investment discussions held during World Urban Forum
While attending the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF 13) in Azerbaijan, His Majesty also held several side meetings with business leaders and companies interested in exploring investment opportunities in Eswatini.
The meetings formed part of broader efforts to attract foreign direct investment and strengthen economic partnerships between Eswatini and other countries.
The King said the engagements provided an opportunity to showcase Eswatini as an investment destination and encourage international companies to establish operations in the Kingdom.
Energy sector opportunities explored
Among the companies His Majesty met was the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), one of the largest energy firms in the region.
The King extended an invitation to SOCAR to consider investing in Eswatini, particularly as the country advances plans to establish a strategic oil reserve facility.
He explained that discussions focused on understanding how the company operates and exploring areas where Eswatini could benefit from its expertise and experience.
The engagement is expected to support Government’s efforts to strengthen energy security and develop strategic infrastructure.
Strengthening economic partnerships
The proposed allocation of land for Azerbaijani investors reflects Government’s continued drive to attract investment, create employment opportunities and diversify the economy.
Officials believe the planned industrial developments could contribute to increased manufacturing activity, technology transfer and skills development while positioning Eswatini as a regional business hub.
The King’s visit to Azerbaijan and the UAE formed part of ongoing efforts to build international partnerships capable of supporting the country’s long-term development objectives and improving the livelihoods of
