PIGGS PEAK – Government has strengthened its commitment to youth empowerment and community development through a strategic partnership with Piggs Peak Town Council that will see investments in skills training and the upgrading of sports infrastructure in the town.
The initiative, spearheaded through the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) and supported by the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC), was formalised through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at creating opportunities for young people while improving the quality of life for residents.
At the centre of the government’s intervention is a plan to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution in Piggs Peak. The Ministry of Education and Training will provide trainers, develop accredited curricula, ensure adherence to quality standards and assist in mobilising resources required for the successful operation of the institution.
As part of the initial phase, the ministry and council are rolling out a Vocational Skills Training Programme in sewing, with enrolment expected to commence in July. The programme is intended to equip young people with practical and marketable skills that will enhance their employability and create pathways to entrepreneurship.
Government’s development drive also extends to sport, with the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council partnering with the local authority to improve sporting facilities and increase participation in physical activity among young people.
The collaboration will focus on rehabilitating and upgrading sports infrastructure, conducting audits of existing facilities, introducing outdoor sporting programmes and providing technical training for coaches, referees and sports administrators.
In a significant step towards improving local sports facilities, an ESRC technical team has already conducted a site assessment of the Piggs Peak Club Sports Ground. The assessment identified short-term maintenance interventions aimed at addressing safety, accessibility and usability concerns as authorities work towards developing modern multi-purpose sporting facilities.
The sports-focused partnership is expected to create an enabling environment for talent identification and development while promoting healthy lifestyles among residents.
Piggs Peak Town Council has also joined forces with Young Heroes to strengthen social welfare programmes targeting HIV and AIDS, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), child protection and youth empowerment initiatives.
The strategic partnerships underscore government’s determination to use education, sport and community development as key tools for economic growth and social transformation. For Piggs Peak, the agreements represent a major step towards creating opportunities for young people, improving public facilities and building a stronger and more resilient community.
