- Trained teachers to strengthen STEM education

MBABANE – The Government of Eswatini, through the Ministry of Education and Training, has trained Mathematics and Science teachers from 106 schools across the country’s four regions in a move aimed at improving the quality of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The week-long workshop was supported by the World Bank and focused on equipping teachers with practical skills to enhance classroom learning.
The training brought together educators from primary and secondary schools to strengthen their ability to deliver Mathematics and Science lessons using more practical, learner-centred teaching methods. The initiative forms part of Government’s ongoing efforts to improve learning outcomes and prepare learners with skills needed in a rapidly changing world.
During the workshop, teachers were trained to move beyond theory-based teaching and adopt hands-on approaches that encourage learners to actively participate in lessons. The programme also provided educators with foundational teaching tools that can be applied from primary school through to higher grades, helping to build stronger knowledge and understanding of Mathematics and Science.
Another key area of the training focused on helping teachers identify and address challenges that discourage learners from excelling in the two subjects. Educators were introduced to strategies that enable them to teach according to learners’ different abilities while reducing fear and anxiety often associated with Mathematics and Science.
The workshop also served as a platform for collaboration among key institutions involved in education. Stakeholders who participated included the National Curriculum Centre (NCC), the University of Eswatini, Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU), William Pitcher College and Ngwane Teachers College. Their contributions centred on strengthening the country’s STEM curriculum and improving teaching standards.
The Ministry of Education and Training said empowering teachers with modern teaching methods is key to improving learner performance and increasing interest in STEM subjects. The Ministry added that stronger Mathematics and Science education will help develop a skilled workforce capable of supporting Eswatini’s economic growth, innovation and technological advancement.
The successful completion of the workshop marks another step in Government’s commitment, with support from the World Bank, to strengthen the education sector and ensure that learners across the country receive quality, practical and inclusive STEM education.
