MBABANE – A week after a devastating fire reduced part of a busy commercial complex in Matsapha to ashes, leaving business owners, workers and customers in disbelief, authorities have launched a formal investigation to uncover what sparked the blaze and how similar disasters can be prevented.
Chief Fire Officer Luke Lushaba has appointed a seven member task team to investigate the fire that gutted the commercial complex, which housed three businesses, including Sun Way.
The blaze sent thick smoke billowing into the sky and drew crowds of anxious onlookers as firefighters battled to contain the flames. When the smoke finally cleared, businesses that had taken years to build lay in ruins, while owners and employees were left wondering what the future would hold.
Now, attention has shifted from the flames to finding answers.
Speaking during a press briefing, Lushaba said the seven-member team has been entrusted with carrying out a thorough investigation into the incident. The team will establish the cause of the fire, determine how the flames spread, assess the size of the affected premises and calculate the extent of the damage caused.
He said the findings will not only explain what happened but will also help improve fire prevention measures and strengthen emergency response efforts to better protect lives, businesses and property.
“The investigation will establish what caused the fire, how extensive the damage was and the characteristics of the affected building. These findings will help us develop lasting solutions to improve firefighting efforts and enhance the protection of lives and property,” said Lushaba.
The investigation is also expected to identify lessons that can be used to strengthen fire safety standards in commercial buildings and improve preparedness for future emergencies.
For the business owners whose dreams were reduced to rubble and for employees whose livelihoods were suddenly interrupted, the investigation represents more than a technical exercise. It is a search for answers that could help prevent another family, another entrepreneur and another community from experiencing a similar tragedy.
Authorities have appealed to the public to refrain from speculation and allow investigators to complete their work. The findings of the seven member task team are expected to guide future fire safety policies and reinforce Eswatini’s efforts to reduce the impact of destructive fires.
