MBABANE– Proposed regulations could see electrical appliances sold in Eswatini subjected to minimum safety and energy-efficiency standards, as stakeholder consultations on the new framework got underway yesterday.
The first Stakeholder Engagement Forum on the Draft Regulations for the Enforcement of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Appliances Standards, 2026, was held at Sibane Sami Hotel in Ezulwini yesterday, bringing together stakeholders to discuss the proposed framework.
The regulations seek to introduce Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and energy labelling to ensure that electrical and electronic equipment placed on the local market meets set energy-efficiency requirements.
The forum also focused on product safety, consumer protection and environmental sustainability, with stakeholders given an opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns, identify gaps and make recommendations before the regulations are finalised.
The proposed standards could affect everyday appliances such as refrigerators, lighting equipment and air conditioners, among other electrical and electronic products.
Improving the energy efficiency of such appliances could help households and businesses reduce unnecessary electricity consumption and potentially lower electricity costs.
It could also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Eswatini’s efforts towards environmental protection and a more sustainable and resource-efficient economy.
The consultations are being held to ensure that the proposed regulations take into account the practical concerns of those who buy, import, sell, supply or work with electrical and electronic equipment.
Following yesterday’s engagement, the consultation process continues today, September 9, 2026, in Manzini at The George Hotel.
Further consultations are scheduled for Nhlangano tomorrow, September 10, at 9:30am at the EWSC Conference Hall, while the final session will be held in Siteki on September 11 at 9:30am at Siteki Hotel.
Members of the public, businesses, importers, suppliers and other stakeholders have been encouraged to attend the regional consultations and contribute their views before the proposed regulations are finalised.
The consultation process is expected to help develop practical standards that strengthen consumer protection while promoting safer appliances, efficient energy use and environmental sustainability in Eswatini.
