MBABANE – Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Prince Simelane has described the late Chief Justice Moses Cuthbert Bhekie Maphalala as a dedicated servant of the nation who served with integrity and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
The Government of Eswatini and the Judiciary of Eswatini announced with deep sorrow the passing of the Chief Justice, who died in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026, while receiving medical attention in the Republic of South Africa.
In a press statement issued by Minister Prince Simelane, the Government and Judiciary said the Chief Justice’s death represented a huge and irreplaceable loss to the country.
“The Honourable Chief Justice served the nation with integrity and unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and the administration of justice in the Kingdom of Eswatini,” reads the statement.
Minister Prince Simelane said Maphalala’s passing was not only a loss to the Judiciary and the legal fraternity, but also to the Government and the nation at large.
“His passing is a huge and irreplaceable loss not only to the Judiciary of Eswatini and the Legal fraternity, but to the Eswatini Government and the nation at large,” the statement reads.
The Government and Judiciary extended their deepest condolences to the Maphalala family, his loved ones and colleagues during what was described as a difficult period of mourning for the nation.
The condolences were conveyed on behalf of His Majesty King Mswati III, the Queen Mother, the Government of Eswatini, the Judiciary and the entire nation.
The statement said the Judiciary, in consultation with the Eswatini Government and the Maphalala family, would keep the nation informed about funeral arrangements.
The arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Maphalala’s death comes as the country mourns the loss of the head of its Judiciary, with tributes expected to follow from across the legal fraternity and other sectors of society.
