PIGG’S PEAK – Education reforms are moving from policy documents into Eswatini’s classrooms, with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Eswatini Mission visiting schools to see first-hand how Competency-Based Education (CBE) is being implemented.
The mission visited four schools on Thursday, September 10, 2026, as part of efforts to assess the implementation of CBE and other initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s education system.
Among the institutions visited were Moyeni High School and Lutfotja Primary School, where the delegation had an opportunity to observe teaching and learning under the CBE approach while engaging directly with school leaders, teachers and other education stakeholders.
The school visits gave the mission an opportunity to move beyond boardroom discussions and policy planning by getting a clearer picture of what is happening inside classrooms.
Through discussions with teachers and school administrators, the team gathered first-hand information on their experiences, teaching practices and some of the realities encountered as the new education approach takes shape.
The engagements are particularly important because teachers and learners are at the centre of the implementation process and experience the changes brought by education reforms on a daily basis.
Information and lessons gathered during the school visits are expected to contribute towards strengthening Eswatini’s Partnership Compact and supporting efforts to improve the implementation of Competency-Based Education.
The exercise also demonstrated the importance of close cooperation between schools, the Ministry of Education and Training, GPE and development partners as the country continues working towards strengthening its education system.
For schools, the visits provide an important platform to communicate their experiences directly to stakeholders involved in education development.
They also allow those supporting education reforms to better understand progress being made at school level, as well as areas that may require continued attention and support.
By engaging directly with educators on the ground, the GPE Eswatini Mission is helping ensure that discussions around education reform are informed not only by policies and reports, but also by the lived experiences of teachers and learners.
The school-level engagements underline the importance of understanding education reforms from the classroom, where their impact is ultimately felt and where the success of CBE will be determined.
