MBABANE – Construction of Eswatini’s 80 million-litre Strategic Oil Reserve Facility is taking shape at Phuzamoya, with the Eswatini National Petroleum Company (ENPC) developing the facility to strengthen national fuel security and help maintain supply during disruptions.
The facility, once completed, will provide enough strategic storage to cover approximately 60 days of national fuel supply, strengthening Eswatini’s ability to withstand external supply shocks and maintain fuel availability for motorists, businesses and other fuel-dependent sectors.
The project will comprise eight storage tanks, with four tanks dedicated to diesel and four to unleaded petrol. Each fuel type will have a storage capacity of 40 million litres, giving the facility a combined capacity of 80 million litres.
The development is part of efforts to strengthen Eswatini’s energy resilience by providing a strategic reserve that can be drawn on when disruptions affect the normal supply of petroleum products.
ENPC has indicated that work at the Phuzamoya site continues to progress, with the latest views from the construction site showing the infrastructure steadily taking shape.
The project is expected to play an important role in protecting the country against fuel supply interruptions, particularly those arising from external market and supply chain disruptions.
Beyond securing fuel availability, the strategic reserve is expected to strengthen the resilience of the wider economy, as reliable fuel supplies are essential for transportation, businesses and other economic activities.
The development at Phuzamoya therefore represents a long-term investment in Eswatini’s energy security, with the facility set to provide the country with greater capacity to manage periods of fuel supply uncertainty once completed.
The Strategic Oil Reserve Facility is managed by ENPC and is being developed as a key national infrastructure project focused on securing the Kingdom’s future fuel supply.
