PIGG’S PEAK – Former students of Mhlatane High School who could not attend the school’s Award Day that was held last week still found a way to support the institution through contributing about E2,000 towards rewarding pupils who excelled academically.
The gesture formed part of the school’s growing partnership with its alumni, as former students continue to give back to the institution and encourage current pupils to work hard in their studies.
Although some alumni had been invited to the event but could not attend due to other commitments, they contributed financially towards the school’s initiative. The money was subsequently used by the school to recognise and reward pupils who performed well academically.
Mhlatane High School Headteacher Dr Siphiwe Dludlu said the school appreciated the commitment shown by its former students, even when they were unable to attend the event physically.
She said some alumni wanted to pass on values that had helped shape them, including hard work, respect, accountability and discipline.
“Some of the alumni have values that we would love our pupils to have today, which are hard work, respect, accountability and discipline,” said Dr Dludlu.
The headteacher said the school was working towards building a wider network of former students who could continue supporting and mentoring current pupils.
The E2,000 contribution was among the initiatives demonstrating that alumni support does not necessarily require their physical presence at school events. Through their contributions, former pupils are able to motivate learners and encourage academic excellence.
The school has also received other forms of assistance from its alumni. According to Dr Dludlu, some former students have bought school uniforms for two pupils in need, while another alumnus paid school fees for two pupils while choosing to remain anonymous.
The partnership is therefore providing a platform for former Mhlatane students to remain connected to their former school while contributing to the educational development and welfare of current learners.
For the school, the support from alumni is not only about financial contributions, but also about creating a culture where former pupils return to inspire and support the next generation.
