MANZINI – Emaswati have been encouraged to undergo regular cancer screening and seek medical attention as soon as they notice possible symptoms, as early detection can improve the chances of receiving timely treatment.
Speaking on the Kusile Breakfast show, National Cancer Programme Manager Xolisile Dlamini said early detection remains an important part of the country’s response to cancer. She encouraged members of the public not to wait until symptoms become severe before visiting health facilities for medical checks.
She said the Eswatini Government had trained nurses and doctors on cancer screening and detection, strengthening the ability of health workers to identify possible cases and guide patients towards appropriate care.
Dlamini also highlighted the importance of understanding cancer and taking steps that can help reduce the risk of developing the disease. She said about 40 per cent of people are able to survive cancer.
Eswatini Cancer Network Programme Manager Dumisile Ngwenya urged the public to make cancer screening part of their regular health checks. Ngwenya said the organisation takes screening services into communities through mobile clinics, where nurses provide checks closer to people who may face difficulties accessing services.
She said community-based screening provides an opportunity for people to identify possible health concerns and seek further medical attention at an earlier stage. Ngwenya urged people who notice symptoms that could be associated with cancer to seek medical attention rather than ignoring or delaying the signs.
The emphasis on screening comes as Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues to promote public knowledge about breast cancer, early detection and access to appropriate health services.
For communities, regular screening and prompt medical attention can help ensure that possible cancer concerns are identified and referred for further assessment.
They encouraged members of the public to take responsibility for their health by seeking professional advice whenever they have concerns instead of relying on assumptions or waiting for the condition to worsen.
