MANZINI – Writers have been recognised for their creative work through Imisebe Publishers writing competition, with the winning entries receiving a combined E21 000 in prize money.
Skhanyiso Bophela took first position with Impela Ngiyawuke Ngive, winning E10 000, while 16-year-old Silindelewena Dlongolo secured second position with Ingabe Iselephi and received E5 000.
Third position was shared by Nombulelo Mndzebele with Lutsandvo Lolungenamuncele and Gcina Mhlanga with Emadlelo Laluhlata, with each writer receiving E3 000.
Dlongolo, from Duze High School at Siphofaneni, was the youngest writer among those recognised in the competition. She said the opportunity provided by Imisebe Publishers had given writers a platform to promote their work and receive support. “This opportunity will inspire me to keep writing and growing,” said Dlongolo.
For Dlongolo, the recognition has provided encouragement at an early stage of her writing journey, while the opportunity to promote her work has strengthened her determination to continue writing.
Her recognition comes as part of a competition that provided writers with an opportunity to present their creative works and have them assessed alongside other entries.
The winning works reflect different literacy contributions from writers who participated in the competition, with the prizes recognising their efforts and creativity.
Dr Hugh Magagula encouraged writers to remain positive regardless of the outcome of a writing competition. He reminded writers that not winning does not take away from their identity as writers and encouraged them to continue developing their work.
“Keep writing, believe in your work and continue pursuing your passion,” Magagula said. His message placed emphasis on persistence and continued development, encouraging writers to remain committed to their craft beyond the results of a single competition.
The competition has also highlighted the role of publishing platforms in giving writers space to present their work and reach audiences beyond their immediate surroundings.
The writers’ achievements demonstrate how writing competitions can provide opportunities for emerging voices to gain recognition, build confidence and continue developing their literary work.
