MBABANE — Mr. Christopher Mtsetfwa, speaking on behalf of the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture, Sydney B. Simelane, emphasized the urgent need for coordinated efforts to transform Africa’s seed sector during the African Union Seed Sector Learning and Planning Meeting held in Eswatini.

According to Mr Mtsetfwa seed systems are the backbone of food security, climate resilience, and economic stability in Africa. This is highlighting the role of quality seed in boosting agricultural productivity and community resilience.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from the private sector, farmer organizations, national seed regulatory authorities, research institutions, and development partners. Central to the discussions were policy alignment with the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and Action Plan (2025–2036) and insights from the 2023 Seed Sector Performance Index (SSPI).

The gathering also focused on promoting the African Seed and Biotechnology Programme (ASBP), which provides a framework for improving seed quality, accessibility, and governance across the continent. Efforts were made to increase the uptake and ownership of the SSPI report at national and regional levels.

Key topics included the development of national and community seed banks, enhancement of farmer-managed seed systems, and the strengthening of ASBP governance structures for improved visibility and reporting. The expected outcomes of the meeting include greater collaboration among stakeholders, a deeper understanding of seed sector challenges, and renewed commitment to advancing seed development, particularly in countries with emerging seed industries.

“Let us harness the power of knowledge and data to drive positive change in our seed sector and uplift the livelihoods of our communities,” Mtsetfwa concluded, encouraging continued engagement and cooperation among all involved.
