MBABANE – In a transformative step, Emaswati may soon be able to apply for national identity (ID) cards and passports online within the next 12 months.

This announcement was made by Bonga Ndlangamandla, Director of e-Government Services at the Ministry of ICT, during a collaboration event between the Eswatini Government and Google. The event was held on January 20, 2024, at the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) Auditorium in Ezulwini.

Ndlangamandla was responding to a question from an attendee who asked which services would be available under the e-Government initiative by December 31, 2025, as part of the Government In Your Hand (GIYH) program.

“We are developing a range of services to provide to the public over the next 12 months,” Ndlangamandla explained. He emphasized the focus on high-demand services, developed in partnership with institutions like the Royal Science and Technology Park (RSTP).

He outlined examples of upcoming services, including online applications for national ID cards, passports, and birth certificates through the Ministry of Home Affairs. Additionally, services from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Trade, such as business registration and the application and renewal of trading licenses, are set to be included.

Social security services are also being considered, according to Ndlangamandla. “We are exploring social security services offered by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office (DPMO), including grant applications. The Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s offerings, such as government scholarships, are also part of the plan,” he said.

Ndlangamandla noted that while a scholarship portal already exists, further improvements are needed to streamline the distribution of these services.

He also highlighted plans to bring academic experts to Eswatini to educate citizens on various technological disciplines, including artificial intelligence (AI). The government will prioritize support for students interested in science and technology subjects. To ensure the success of these initiatives, the Ministry plans to collaborate with the media where necessary.
