MBABANE – In a heartwarming step towards cultural inclusion, this year’s Umhlanga Reed Dance Ceremony is set to welcome girls with disabilities, ensuring that Eswatini’s treasured tradition embraces everyone.
Thanks to the efforts of the Sun Screen Drive and the Strength to Cope Counselling Foundation, 12 girls and 10 who are deaf joining from DPM Office. It on the second paragraphhave already registered to participate, with more expected to join. The initiative celebrates the message that disability is not inability, and that cultural heritage belongs to all emaSwati.
Bongiwe Dlamini, Disability Advocate and Event Planner, expressed excitement at seeing young girls with disabilities take part in one of the country’s most iconic traditions. “This is about making sure every girl has the chance to fully experience her culture,” she said.
Support for the project has been overwhelming. Princess Sakhizwe stepped forward with food, water, juice, transport, and accommodation. Nompilo Dlamini donated protective hats for albino participants, while Mr Cheap provided emahiya and emagcebesha, ensuring the girls look the part in their traditional regalia.
While contributions are still needed—particularly transport for wheelchair users and additional attire—the community spirit is shining brightly. Organisers encourage more persons with disabilities to register and indicate the assistance they may need to participate fully.
