MBABANE – Approximately 700 residents of Lobamba Lomdzala Inkhundla can now traverse safely following the official inauguration of the Izola E1.2 million suspension bridge.

This bridge, constructed through a collaboration between Engineers in Action and the Microproject initiative under the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, was formally opened by Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Thulisile Dladla, Lobamba Lomdzala Member of Parliament (MP) Marwick Khumalo, and Prince Lembelele, in the presence of the local community on Friday.

The atmosphere was electric as community members erupted in cheers, celebrating the launch of a transformative partnership aimed at delivering essential infrastructure to underserved areas.

The Izola Suspension Bridge, measuring 52 metres in length, stands as a testament to the efficacy of collaboration, local capacity-building and community-centric development, while also commemorating a seven-year partnership between Engineers in Action and Microprojects in Eswatini.

Throughout this collaboration, Engineers in Action has provided comprehensive training to local engineers and masons, equipping them to undertake significant infrastructure projects autonomously.

MP Marwick Khumalo underscored the bridge’s profound impact, asserting that it will foster a robust economy for the Emaswati communities while ensuring safe passage for vulnerable groups, including women, children, people living with disability and the elderly.

The Izola Suspension Bridge marks the 28th and final bridge constructed this year, concluding the 2024 season on a triumphant note and setting the stage for future developments. As Engineers in Action and Microprojects gear up for another impactful year, their focus remains steadfast on sustainable, community-driven solutions that elevate the people of Eswatini.
