MBABANE – Ministry of Education and Training Principal Secretary (PS) Bheki Gama was given a special paid leave so that he can be able to recover.
The special leave was for six months, starting from July 2024. This was said by Minister of Education and Training Owen Nxumalo today (Monday, October 28, 2024) during a press conference. Nxumalo convened this press conference to set the record straight on the matter involving Gama and other officials and staff members within the Ministry of Education and Training.
It was reported yesterday that Gama alleged that he had been locked out of his office, stating that this was one challenge he faced and it was neglected. He alleged that Acting PS Nanikie Mnisi was the one causing the problems for him. He further alleged that his secretary was given leave without his approval and he was left stranded on the benches within the Ministry because he has been denied access to his office.
Speaking about the matter today, Nxumalo said Gama was asked by his employer, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to go on a special leave, so that he could be given enough time to recuperate. This was after the CSC observed Gama’s ill health. According to Nxumalo, CSC Chairperson Simanga Mamba, Secretary to Cabinet Victor Nxumalo, and Attorney General (AG) Sifiso Khumalo’s representative communicated this message in person to Gama.
According to the minister, Gama was advised to recuperate at home until such time he felt he was ready to work again. This was supported by a memorandum dated July 18, 2024, according to the minister. The minister stated that his Ministry expected the PS to report to CSC or Secretary to Cabinet when he felt he was ready for duty. He said the two above-mentioned officials would need to write another memorandum to advise the ministry on steps needed to be taken to enable a smooth transition.
Nxumalo said such a move would be necessary because the Ministry of Education Under Secretary (US) (Administration) Nanikie Mnisi was requested on July 23, 2024 to act as the Ministry’s PS for a period not exceeding six months. As a Ministry, Nxumalo said they knew the PS as a professional who knew what needed to be done.
Therefore, he requested him to refrain from calling officers in the Ministry to his office during his visits. Nxumalo further requested that the acting PS should not take orders from the PS until there was a communication from the CSC and/or Secretary to Cabinet. He further pleaded with the members of the public, including the media, to treat this matter with utmost respect and privacy and pleaded for cooperation in helping Gama on his road to recovery.
