MBABANE – Principal Secretary (PS) for the Ministry of Education and Training, Bheki Gama, has officially resumed his duties.

This was confirmed by Acting Principal Secretary Nanikie Mnisi during an update on preparations for the reopening of schools.

Mnisi explained that Gama’s return marks the conclusion of a recovery period granted by the government.

“PS Gama was given time to recuperate, and according to the stipulated duration, he is now fit to resume his responsibilities. I am currently in the process of officially handing over the PS duties back to him,” Mnisi said.

She expressed gratitude to the Ministry’s leadership and the government for trusting her to act as PS during Gama’s absence.

Gama also confirmed his return, stating that his immediate focus would be on collaborating with Minister of Education and Training Owen Nxumalo to establish a clear path forward.

He extended his best wishes to all stakeholders as schools prepare to open for the 2025 academic year, expressing confidence that the first day of school would proceed smoothly.

Looking ahead, Gama emphasized that the government remains committed to improving the country’s education sector, particularly through the ongoing process of hiring teachers.

Gama’s absence stemmed from a special paid leave granted by the government in July 2024. This leave followed tensions between Gama and staff members at the Ministry, including Mnisi. During a press conference in October 2024, Minister Nxumalo clarified that Gama had been advised to take time off due to health reasons.

Nxumalo dismissed claims that Gama had been locked out of his office, explaining that the Civil Service Commission (CSC) had directed him to recuperate at home. This arrangement aimed to ensure that Gama regained his health before resuming work.

According to a memorandum dated July 18, 2024, Mnisi was appointed to act as PS beginning July 23, 2024, for a period not exceeding six months. Her tenure has now ended with Gama’s return to office.

The Ministry of Education and Training is poised to build on its efforts to strengthen the education system, with PS Gama back at the helm and working closely with Minister Nxumalo to address pressing challenges.
