….. Winter load management sees strong public support as Eswatini moves toward energy sustainability

MBABANE – The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has announced encouraging progress in its Power Shift Winter Load Management Campaign.

The initiative, launched in June 2025, aims to ease pressure on the national grid by encouraging citizens to shift electricity usage away from peak hours, and the response from the public has been nothing short of inspiring.

From homesteads to businesses, Emaswati are embracing smarter energy habits such as bulk cooking during off-peak times and proactively adjusting to published load management schedules. The campaign has led to a noticeable shift in electricity usage patterns across the country, bringing stability and hope to an energy system under regional strain.

“We sincerely appreciate the public’s responsiveness and cooperation,” said Khaya Mavuso, EEC’s Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager. “The behavioural change we are witnessing is a strong signal of national commitment to securing reliable power for all.”

Addressing Public Concerns with Compassion

In its outreach efforts, EEC has responded to public concerns with clarity and empathy. The company reaffirmed its commitment to fairness in its load shedding rotations, emphasizing that no area is targeted based on class or geography. Critical institutions such as hospitals and water treatment plants are shielded from outages to maintain essential services.

EEC has also tackled misinformation around unplanned power cuts, noting that such incidents stem from faults or emergencies and are addressed with real-time updates through digital platforms. In rural areas, where access to digital schedules can be limited, the campaign has expanded to radio, SMS, and community outreach, ensuring no one is left behind.

Supporting Small Businesses and Households

Recognizing the potential impact on economic activities, EEC has worked to minimize disruptions by promoting energy-saving practices and supporting domestic users. Notably, the company has clarified that most load management occurs outside peak business hours, allowing many enterprises to operate smoothly.

Regional Perspective and Future Vision

Eswatini’s energy challenges are part of a broader regional issue, shared by many SADC countries. However, the country is taking proactive steps. In collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy and the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA), EEC is investing in advanced infrastructure and sustainable energy diversification to create a resilient power system for the future.

A post-campaign review is set for late July, during which feedback will be assessed, and new strategies introduced for the final stretch of the campaign in August.

“Together, we can ensure a more stable and efficient energy future,” said Mavuso. “We thank all EEC customers and urge continued commitment to responsible energy use.”
