MBABANE – A new chapter in Eswatini’s medical education will begin this August as 21 pioneering students are set to commence their studies in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at Eswatini Medical Christian University (EMCU).
This milestone was confirmed in the Ministry of Education and Training’s 2025/2026 first quarter performance report, which highlighted EMCU’s progress and vision for healthcare training in the Kingdom.
Rigorous Selection Process for Future Doctors
The Faculty of Medicine conducted a comprehensive selection process, including interviews and essay examinations, for applicants seeking admission into the MBBS programme. From this process, 21 candidates emerged successfully, with all members of the student selection committee present for the final decision.

This intake marks the university’s official launch of the medical degree programme, a long-anticipated addition to its growing list of academic offerings.
Expanding Academic Programmes and Strategic Partnerships
EMCU currently offers a diverse portfolio of academic programmes, including:
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
- Computer Science
- Medical Laboratory Sciences
- Nursing Science
- Pharmacy
- Radiography
- Psychology
- Social Work
The institution operates under a Memorandum of Agreement of Lease between the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Africa Continent Mission, with a separate agreement involving the African Union Mission to guide operational collaboration. These agreements are reviewed every five years, with the last review conducted in 2023.
Milestones and Celebrations
The 2024/2025 academic year was a successful one for EMCU. Teaching and examinations proceeded smoothly, and results have been released to students on schedule.
One of the year’s major highlights was EMCU’s 8th graduation ceremony, which took place at the newly completed chapel. The event drew over 1,500 attendees, including 216 graduates, their families, and dignitaries. It also marked a leadership transition: Founding Chancellor Professor Chun Yoon stepped down and now serves in several campus roles, including Chaplain and Dean of Student Affairs. He was succeeded by Rev. Dr. Pil-Jae Lee, a respected retired pastor from Bundang Calvary Church in South Korea.
On 7 May 2025, EMCU also celebrated its first official anniversary—a moment delayed in previous years due to the institution’s earlier challenges. The celebration has since been declared an annual holiday on the university calendar. Staff excellence awards, initially scheduled for the anniversary, were awarded on 22 May.
Focus on Health Advocacy and Research
In collaboration with the Eswatini Epilepsy Organization (EEO), EMCU co-hosted a successful “Women and Epilepsy Conference”, bringing together psychiatrists and specialists in neurological health. The event was led by Mr Abraham Ntshalintshali and highlighted EMCU’s growing footprint in public health advocacy.
Academically, the university has also made strides, with several faculty members publishing research papers over the past year. While not yet on par with global institutions, these efforts are commendable for a young university that has been operating for just over a decade.
Infrastructure and Student Welfare Remain Key Challenges
Despite the positive developments, EMCU continues to face several challenges:
- The main campus infrastructure and teaching tools require urgent improvement.
- Student housing, particularly for female students, is a pressing concern due to unsafe living conditions in surrounding areas.
- Although a new multi-sport playground has been completed—featuring volleyball, basketball, and football facilities—more support is needed to improve student amenities.
Recommendations for Sustainable Growth
To support EMCU’s long-term success, stakeholders have proposed the following:
- Update the governing agreements between the Government and the Africa Continent Mission to reflect the university’s growth trajectory.
- Strengthen partnerships and collaborate with international donors to fund campus development and student accommodation projects.
A Promising Future for Medical Education
With the imminent arrival of the first cohort of medical students, EMCU stands at the forefront of medical and technical education in Eswatini. The university’s resilience, strategic partnerships, and expanding academic offerings position it as a key player in the nation’s higher education and healthcare landscape.
