MBABANE– Cross border ties between Eswatini and Mozambique have been significantly strengthened with the official signing of the LONA Water Project Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement, which formalizes a joint initiative to enhance regional resource sharing, was sealed by Eswatini’s Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Prince Lonkhokhelo Dlamini, and Mozambique’s Minister Rafael Fernando.
This high-level action is a testament to how collaboration can create real, tangible change for neighboring communities. The LONA Water Project is a vital initiative designed to deliver clean water and promote broader development for two specific border communities: Lomahasha in Eswatini and Namaacha in Mozambique.
The project’s primary aim is to ensure both communities benefit from reliable water access, thereby strengthening the relationship between the two nations through shared resource management. This type of infrastructure development is critical for improving public health, sanitation, and overall quality of life in the targeted areas, showcasing the practical success of neighborly cooperation.
The country is showing progress toward achieving the national vision of providing 100% access to clean water by 2030. Coverage currently stands at 76%, with major infrastructure projects underway across the Kingdom to expand services to all communities. The LONA Water Project forms part of these broader efforts, reflecting the government’s commitment to safe and reliable water access for every citizen. The project also aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, demonstrating the country’s commitment to global development goals.
While the official sealing of the MoU marks a major diplomatic milestone, the project is already underway, with the EWSC leading the technical and logistical implementation necessary to bring the scheme to fruition.
The signing ceremony, attended by officials from both Eswatini and Mozambique, highlights the commitment at the highest levels of government to regional integration and collective progress. The LONA project serves as a model for promoting resource sharing and fostering deeper ties between the neighboring countries, demonstrating that cross border collaboration flows smoothly when focused on shared human needs.
This enduring partnership is set to benefit thousands of residents in both Lomahasha and Namaacha, reinforcing the principle that joint effort makes significant positive change possible.
