EZULWINI – In a bold move to tackle the escalating global crisis of misinformation, Eswatini and Taiwan have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at countering the manipulation of information.

The agreement, sealed this morning at Royal Villas, sets the stage for a stronger partnership between the two nations in promoting truth and transparency in the digital age.

Eswatini’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Pholile Shakantu, and Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, H.E Dr. Lin Chia-lung, both emphasized the importance of collaboration in fighting disinformation, a threat that has far-reaching consequences for democracy and social stability.

Minister Shakantu, in her address, highlighted the significance of the MoU, describing it as a pivotal moment in the growing relationship between Eswatini and Taiwan.

She stressed that the agreement goes beyond a formal document; it is a commitment to safeguard against the damaging effects of misinformation that can undermine public trust and democratic values.

“This memorandum signifies not only a deepening of our bilateral relations but also our steadfast commitment to uphold the principles of truth, transparency, and democratic governance,” Shakantu said.

“The rapid spread of misinformation can undermine national reputations, disrupt social stability, and threaten the very foundations of democracy.”

Shakantu expressed gratitude to the Government of Taiwan for its expertise in countering disinformation, noting that the Kingdom of Eswatini would benefit significantly from Taiwan’s experience.

She also called on local media stakeholders to take an active role in the initiative, urging them to use their platforms to educate the public, promote transparency, and challenge false narratives.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Lin Chia-lung, shared his country’s experience in battling disinformation, revealing that Taiwan has been the target of foreign disinformation attacks for over a decade. Despite these challenges, Taiwan has developed effective strategies to counter fake news, and Dr. Lin expressed eagerness to share these solutions with Eswatini.

“False and malicious information can mislead the public, disrupt social harmony, and undermine trust in government,” Dr. Lin stated. “For 11 consecutive years, Taiwan has faced severe foreign disinformation attacks. However, this challenge has allowed us to accumulate extensive experience in countering and managing disinformation. We are more than willing to share this knowledge with Eswatini.”

He emphasized that the MoU would provide a framework for both nations to work together in combating disinformation through technical exchanges, fact-checking initiatives, and media literacy programs. He also underlined the crucial role of accurate information in ensuring national stability and development.

“Accurate information is a cornerstone of social stability and national development,” Dr. Lin explained. “This partnership between Taiwan and Eswatini symbolizes our shared commitment to combating information manipulation and ensuring public access to accurate information.”

Both ministers acknowledged the critical role of the media in this initiative. Shakantu urged Eswatini’s media partners to collaborate in promoting truth and transparency.

“Your role is crucial in promoting transparency and accountability,” she said. “You have the power to educate the public, illuminate facts, and challenge false narratives.”

The signing of the MoU, along with a Joint Declaration, strengthens the bilateral ties between Eswatini and Taiwan, paving the way for deeper cooperation in various sectors. The agreement reflects both countries’ dedication to fighting disinformation and creating a more informed, stable, and democratic world.

In conclusion, Shakantu reiterated her appreciation for Taiwan’s ongoing support, emphasizing that the MoU represents a step toward fostering a future where information serves as a foundation for empowerment and societal progress.

“We have the opportunity to foster a future where information serves not as a tool for manipulation, but as a cornerstone for empowerment and advancement,” she concluded.
