MBABANE – Eswatini is celebrating a momentous achievement following the election of Minister of Information, Communications, and Technology, Savannah Maziya as the Chairperson of the Global Council on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) five.
This remarkable milestone was announced at the World Government Summit held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on February 13, 2025.
In a press statement, government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo said Maziya’s appointment as Chairperson is not only a significant personal achievement but also a historic moment for Eswatini.
He stated that it firmly positions the nation as a leader in the global advocacy for gender equality and women empowerment.
As the newly appointed Chairperson, Hon. Maziya will lead international efforts to promote gender inclusivity, equity, and the active participation of women in leadership, economic development, and innovation.
Nxumalo explained that with a longstanding commitment to championing gender equality, Maziya has consistently demonstrated her dedication to empowering women and girls, particularly in the fields of science, technology, and innovation.
“Through her active participation in global forums, she has been a driving force in advocating for the inclusion of women in key decision-making spaces, breaking barriers, and inspiring young girls to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields,” he said.
Nxumalo further explained that Maziya election to this esteemed position underscores the immense potential, influence, and leadership that Eswatini brings to the global stage.
“It highlights the nation’s growing role in international policy-making and its commitment to sustainable development, gender equity, and social transformation. This achievement further opens doors for other citizens of Eswatini, particularly women, to aspire to leadership roles on global platforms and contribute meaningfully to international development,” he said.
Government has expressed full support for Maziya as she embarks on this critical assignment, confident that her leadership will drive impactful policies and programs aimed at achieving true gender equality worldwide.
