MBABANE – Eswatini is forging ahead in its pursuit of energy security, with the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Prince Lonkhokhela, engaging in high-level discussions with Jampur Group, a Dubai-based multinational company specializing in power equipment, shipping, mining, and trading.
The meeting, held in Mbabane, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Eswatini Energy Company (EEC) and the Eswatini Electricity Regulatory Authority (ESERA), who provided technical insights on power generation, transmission, and distribution.
Advancing Energy Independence
Prince Lonkhokhela emphasized the urgent need for Eswatini to diversify its energy sources and establish a reliable, cost-effective local power generation mix. Currently, the country imports a significant portion of its electricity, making self-sufficiency a national priority.
“Achieving energy security is a strategic goal for Eswatini, and we welcome partners like Jampur Group who can help us explore innovative solutions to strengthen our power sector,” said Prince Lonkhokhela.
Smart Metering and Economic Growth
A key highlight of the discussions was the potential establishment of smart meter manufacturing and assembly facilities in Eswatini. The Minister urged Jampur Group to consider setting up operations within the country, positioning Eswatini as a regional hub for advanced metering infrastructure.
“The demand for smart meters is rising across Africa as nations modernize their electricity systems. By developing this industry locally, we can create jobs and boost exports,” he added.
Strengthening Partnerships for the Future
Jampur Group representatives expressed their enthusiasm about collaborating with Eswatini, acknowledging the country’s strategic location and commitment to energy innovation. Further feasibility studies and technical assessments will be conducted to explore investment opportunities that align with Eswatini’s energy goals.
This meeting signals a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions and economic growth, reinforcing Eswatini’s commitment to securing a brighter, self-sufficient future.
