ESWATINI MOURNS THE PASSING OF NAMIBIA’S FOUNDING PRESIDENT SAM NUJOMA

MBABANE – The Kingdom of Eswatini has extended its deepest condolences to the Republic of Namibia following the passing of its founding President, His Excellency Dr. Sam Nujoma.

The heartfelt message, issued on behalf of His Majesty King Mswati III, Her Majesty the Queen Mother, the Government, and the people of Eswatini, was conveyed by Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

In an official statement dated February 9, 2025, Eswatini expressed profound sympathy to Namibia, recognizing Dr. Nujoma’s enduring legacy as the father of Namibian independence. The message, addressed to the High Commission of Namibia in Pretoria, acknowledged his pivotal role in leading Namibia to liberation and praised his lifelong dedication to the advancement of his people.

“We recognize Dr. Nujoma’s pivotal role in Namibia’s liberation and his legacy of courage and resilience, which continues to inspire generations across Africa. His passing is a profound loss not only to Namibia but to the continent as a whole,” the statement read.

Dr. Sam Nujoma, a revered leader and liberation icon, was instrumental in Namibia’s struggle for independence from South African rule, culminating in the nation’s sovereignty in 1990. As Namibia’s first President, he served from 1990 to 2005, laying the foundation for the country’s political and economic stability. His legacy extends beyond his tenure, influencing pan-African movements and shaping policies that continue to benefit Namibia and the region at large.

The Kingdom of Eswatini also used the moment to reaffirm its commitment to regional solidarity and international cooperation, urging the global community to bolster economic collaboration and development initiatives.

“We express our deepest solidarity with the Government and the People of the Republic of Namibia during this time of mourning. Furthermore, we reiterate our call for the international community to intensify efforts in fostering economic cooperation and development initiatives that address the pressing challenges faced by our region,” the Prime Minister stated.

The message concluded with prayers for comfort and strength for the family and relatives of the late Dr. Nujoma, as well as the people of Namibia, as they navigate this period of great sorrow.

As Namibia mourns a leader whose vision shaped the nation’s destiny, Eswatini stands in unity, honoring Dr. Sam Nujoma’s indelible mark on history and the values of freedom, resilience, and African unity that he championed.
