MBABANE – Police officers gathered at the Police Headquarters to pray for a peaceful and incident-free festive season.
The prayer service, which senior police officials and clergy led, emphasised the importance of combining faith with duty to protect the public during the high-risk holiday period.
The National Commissioner of Police Vusi Masango addressed the congregation and expressed his hope for a season devoid of life-altering incidents such as road accidents, fatalities, and violent crimes.
He described the prayer service as a vital initiative to prepare officers spiritually and mentally for the challenges they are likely to face.
“This service is a reminder of our shared mission to ensure safety and peace during the festive season,” Masango said.
The service featured a powerful sermon delivered by Apostle Geina Sukati from Apostolic Life Centre. Drawing from Psalms 127:1, Sukati reminded attendees that efforts without divine intervention are futile: “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labour in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” Sukati’s message inspired hope and underscored the need for divine protection during the busy holiday season.
Masango also called on his officers to exercise restraint in their duties and to always act in the public’s best interest.
“A police officer should never misuse their weapon. Resort to force only when necessary, such as for self-defence or protecting a colleague,” he added.
He further emphasised the importance of professionalism and compassion in law enforcement, urging officers to remember their role in preserving peace and building public trust.
While discussing the wider impact of safety, Masango noted that a secure Eswatini encourages tourism and reassures residents. He expressed optimism that this year could be one of the safest festive seasons in the country’s history, setting a new standard for public safety.
The service also featured a musical performance by Thabile Myeni and her group, whose uplifting gospel songs energised the congregation. Attendees joined in singing and dancing, creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration. The music underscored the sense of purpose and optimism as officers prepared to carry out their responsibilities during the festive period.
Masango concluded the event by expressing gratitude for the support shown by all stakeholders. He reiterated his belief that faith, vigilance, and dedication, could lead to a breakthrough festive season free from major incidents. The gathering was a powerful reminder of the police force’s dual commitment to enforcing the law and fostering hope. As the festive season begins, Eswatini’s law enforcement is determined to protect lives and promote peace, with faith and duty guiding their efforts.
