MBABANE – The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade has launched a pivotal five-day workshop aimed at strengthening the implementation of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures under the EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

The initiative marks a significant step in enhancing Eswatini’s compliance with international food safety standards and bolstering its position in global trade markets.

This workshop stems from findings in an October 2022 study commissioned by the SADC Secretariat, which identified critical gaps in the implementation of SPS Measures across member states. The report highlighted the urgent need for tailored capacity-building initiatives to address country-specific challenges in food safety and trade compliance.

Aiming for Excellence in Trade Standards

The primary goal of the workshop is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively implement SPS Principles. This effort is expected to not only strengthen intra-regional trade among SADC EPA member states but also to enhance Eswatini’s ability to meet the stringent requirements of the EU market. By improving compliance with SPS standards, Eswatini is poised to unlock lucrative opportunities in food export markets globally.

Key Objectives of the Workshop:

• Build capacity in food safety principles.

• Promote awareness of sanitary requirements.

• Develop actionable plans to implement SPS Measures aligned with the EU-SADC EPA framework.

Acknowledging Stakeholder Contributions

Director of International Trade, Lungile Dlamini, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders who made the workshop possible, including the European Union for its unwavering technical support, the SADC Secretariat, speakers, and participants. “This initiative not only strengthens our trade capacity but also cements Eswatini’s commitment to meeting international standards and enhancing economic partnerships,” she remarked.

A Promising Future

As Eswatini continues to invest in capacity-building and compliance initiatives, the workshop underscores the nation’s readiness to compete on a global scale. Strengthened food control systems and adherence to international standards will undoubtedly play a crucial role in driving economic growth and improving market access for Eswatini’s exports.
