MBABANE – In a landmark move to empower local entrepreneurs and boost the national economy, Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, today launched Eswatini’s revised National Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Policy.
The new framework is poised to reshape the country’s entrepreneurial landscape, positioning MSMEs as key drivers of industrialization, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.
During the launch event, Khumalo highlighted the critical role that MSMEs play in Eswatini’s economic ecosystem, stating:
“Our vision as the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Trade is to create an enabling environment for business growth and economic development. The revised MSME Policy builds on the 2018 framework, addressing key challenges while leveraging new opportunities to empower our entrepreneurs and strengthen the national economy.”
The policy is designed to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9, which promotes industrialization, innovation, and infrastructure development, as well as SDG 8, which emphasizes inclusive economic growth, employment, and decent work for all.
A Call to Action for Economic Transformation
Minister Khumalo emphasized the need for collective efforts to ensure the success of the policy, urging stakeholders to actively support the MSME sector.
“Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, this policy is a call for action. Let us commit to nurturing a dynamic MSME sector that fosters innovation, enhances competitiveness, and contributes meaningfully to our national development goals. Let us take this opportunity to create an ecosystem where MSMEs can thrive.”
The policy framework seeks to increase access to financial services for small-scale enterprises, integrate MSMEs into national and international value chains, and promote sustainable industrialization. By addressing challenges such as limited funding, regulatory hurdles, and market access constraints, the policy provides a comprehensive roadmap to strengthen Eswatini’s entrepreneurial landscape.
A Boost for Entrepreneurs and Job Creation
The revised MSME Policy is expected to stimulate job creation, encourage innovation, and bolster economic resilience amid global economic shifts. With an increasing number of youth and women venturing into business, the policy will also facilitate greater financial inclusion and capacity-building programs.
Stakeholders, including financial institutions, government agencies, and private sector players, are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless implementation of the policy. The Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to working with entrepreneurs, investors, and development partners to unlock the full potential of MSMEs in Eswatini.
As Eswatini charts a new path toward economic transformation, the successful implementation of this policy will be key in shaping a more dynamic, competitive, and sustainable business environment.
