MBABANE – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy has issued an urgent public warning after days of persistent rainfall pushed rivers and dams across Eswatini to potentially dangerous levels.
With more rain forecast in the coming days, officials are urging communities—particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas—to remain alert and take every precaution necessary to stay safe.
According to the Ministry, heavy rains that began last week and intensified over the weekend have caused water levels in major rivers to surge well above normal flow. Several national dams are also reported to be nearing full capacity. In an effort to manage the pressure and maintain the structural safety of these dams, controlled water releases may be undertaken, which could further increase downstream flows.
The Ministry cautioned that this combination of swollen rivers and dams operating near their limits presents a heightened risk of flooding, especially for settlements situated close to riverbanks and flood plains. Images released alongside the notice highlight several rivers and dams across the country, detailing their current levels and mapping out their locations. These visuals indicate widespread hydrological stress, reflecting the impact of the continued rainfall.
Residents have been strongly advised to avoid riverbanks, dam surroundings, and any areas already showing signs of flooding. Even shallow or slow-moving water, the Ministry warns, can be deceptively dangerous. Walking or driving through flowing water can result in vehicles being swept away or individuals losing their footing, leading to life-threatening situations within seconds.
Emergency authorities have emphasised that public cooperation is crucial. Communities are urged to monitor official updates, heed warnings, and support one another by sharing reliable information. Parents and guardians are particularly encouraged to ensure that children stay away from rivers and other potentially hazardous areas during this period.
The Ministry also called on local leaders to assist in disseminating the flood warnings, ensuring that remote and vulnerable communities receive timely updates. With rains expected to persist, the situation could evolve rapidly, making early awareness and preparedness essential.
In its statement, the Ministry reiterated that safeguarding lives is the top priority. As climate patterns continue to shift, extreme weather events like heavy rainfall are becoming more frequent, underscoring the need for communities to remain vigilant and responsive during periods of heightened risk.
“We urge the nation to stay alert and prioritise safety,” the Ministry noted in its advisory. “Let us look out for one another during this period of elevated flood danger.”
As the country remains on watch, authorities will continue monitoring river systems and dam levels, issuing further updates as conditions develop. Residents are encouraged to follow official channels for the latest information and to immediately report any signs of rising water, blocked drainage systems, or localised flooding to emergency services.
With preparedness, caution, and community cooperation, officials believe the nation can weather this period safely—but insist that vigilance is essential until water levels stabilise and the threat eases.
