Mkhitsini – Gogo Maphalala (61) has dedicated her life to raising orphans, even those who are not her bloodline. Through love and sacrifice, she has given many children a home and a future.

Residing in the Shiselweni region, Gogo Maphalala has become a pillar of hope in Mkhitsini. Despite limited resources, she has provided shelter, food, and education for numerous orphans, many of whom now call her “Mother.” Her journey has been fueled by determination and a heart full of kindness.

Speaking to Eswatini Positive News she said “I don’t do this for recognition, I do it because every child deserves love and a chance in life,” . She went on to saying that these children become her own the moment they walk through her door.

Her children deeply appreciate her sacrifices. Eswatini Positive News spoke to one of them, now an adult, who credits Gogo Maphalala for shaping their future. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for her. She gave me a home, taught me respect, and made sure I went to school. I owe her everything.”

Beyond her caregiving, Gogo Maphalala is well known for her skill in kukhipha litfuku, a traditional practice done for infants. This side hustle has helped her sustain her family, ensuring that the children under her care never go to bed hungry. “She is the best at it,” said a community member. “People come from far just to have their infants attended by her. It’s amazing how she uses this skill to support so many children.”

Despite the challenges, Gogo Maphalala remains hopeful. “As long as I have strength, I will continue raising these children. My greatest joy is seeing them grow into responsible adults,” she said.

Her story is a reminder that true family is built on love, not just blood. Through her unwavering commitment, she continues to inspire her community and prove that one person’s kindness can change many lives.
