MBABANE – Commuters at the Mbabane Bus Rank got the surprise of a lifetime this morning when they spotted a familiar face among the travelers – none other than the Governor of the Central Bank of Eswatini, Dr. Phil Mnisi.
Clad in casual wear and carrying a confident smile, the Governor wasn’t there for a photo op or a ceremony – he was catching a Muhle Tours bus to Nhlangano! His mission? To personally launch the nationwide Eswatini Payment Switch (EPS) Fast Payments Roadshow.
“This is a people’s campaign,” said Dr. Mnisi before boarding. “What better way to connect with the public than by being with them, hearing their stories, and experiencing their daily journeys?”
The EPS initiative is nothing short of groundbreaking. It introduces real-time payments across all banks and non-bank service providers in the Kingdom – making it easier, faster, and safer to send and receive money. The innovation is set to revolutionize how Emaswati pay for goods, services, and each other.
In Nhlangano, the roadshow drew a vibrant crowd, eager to learn more about the system that promises to simplify their financial lives. Adding flair and laughter to the event were local comedy icons Gogo and Slwane, who turned heads and tickled ribs with their EPS-infused skits. Their humorous but insightful performances made learning about digital payments fun and memorable.
“This is not just about tech,” said a CBE official. “It’s about trust, access, and empowerment. EPS is here to include everyone – from market vendors to students, from rural areas to urban centers.”
Over the next two weeks, the EPS team – with the Governor leading by example – will visit various regions, ensuring every Liswati understands the benefits of fast, secure, and inclusive payments.
So if you see a familiar face on your next bus ride, don’t be surprised. It might just be the Governor, bringing financial innovation to your doorstep.
