MBABANE – Government has called for professionalism and ethical conduct following a widely publicized altercation between the Swaziland National Teachers Association (SNAT) and the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS).

In a statement issued on February 19, 2025, Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo urged SNAT leadership to uphold high standards of professionalism, particularly when engaging with authorities on matters concerning their members.

The dispute reportedly unfolded at the Ministry of Education and Training premises, where SNAT leadership was accused of an “irrational and unacceptable” siege of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) offices. Government emphasized that, as a respected organization, SNAT is expected to demonstrate exemplary behaviour at all times.

Pending court case at the centre of dispute
Government reminded SNAT that the matter at the core of their grievances is currently before the courts and remains sub judice. The Teaching Service Commission, in an earlier engagement with SNAT’s attorneys, indicated that it could not deliberate on the issue until the legal process is completed.

“SNAT leadership should have known better that before the court processes are finalized, the TSC cannot deliberate on the matter they sought to bring to their attention,” read the statement.

Despite not having secured an official appointment, SNAT was granted an impromptu meeting with the TSC Commissioners. However, tensions reportedly escalated when SNAT leadership resisted leaving the offices after the discussion concluded, prompting police intervention. Government noted that the situation could have been avoided had SNAT cooperated with law enforcement officers and the TSC.

Government Condemns Negative Remarks Against Police
The statement also condemned alleged negative remarks made by SNAT Secretary General Lot Vilakati, criticizing the conduct of the Royal Eswatini Police Service. Government strongly defended REPS, describing it as a well-trained and professional force that abides by national laws. “To suggest otherwise is not only undermining but also disrespectful to the service,” the statement asserted.

Call to Maintain SNAT’s Integrity
Government expressed concern that SNAT’s leadership risks allowing political activists to hijack the organization’s agenda. It urged the association to remain focused on its primary mandate—advocating for teachers’ welfare.

“Upholding the integrity and reputation of the organization is paramount,” stated Nxumalo, emphasizing that society looks up to SNAT as a beacon of leadership and moral values.

Government’s statement signals a call for constructive dialogue and a more measured approach to dispute resolution between SNAT and the authorities. As tensions simmer, all eyes will be on how both parties navigate the path forward to ensure stability within Eswatini’s education sector.
