MBABANE – Eswatini is grappling with the aftermath of relentless heavy rains that have wreaked havoc across the nation, leaving communities devastated.
Acting Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla has today expressed deep condolences to those who have suffered loss and reassured the nation of the government’s unwavering commitment to recovery.
The torrential rains have caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural produce, with many communities left cut off from essential services. Tragically, reports indicate loss of life and livelihoods.
Dladla acknowledged the magnitude of the crisis, stating, “Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected, especially those who have lost their loved ones, homes, and livelihoods.”
Government, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), ministries, and partners, has intensified relief efforts. Air rescue missions, supported by the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) and Mercy Air, have been pivotal in evacuating stranded citizens, facilitating medical access, and conducting rapid damage assessments. Dladla extended gratitude to these entities for their critical assistance.
Efforts are underway to rebuild vital infrastructure, including roads and bridges, to reconnect communities and restore access to essential services. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport and municipalities are working tirelessly to address the damage.
“We are prioritizing the restoration of vital infrastructure to ensure the basic needs of all our citizens are met as quickly as possible,” Dladla assured the nation.
Recognizing the challenges ahead, the Acting PM called for national solidarity.
“The scale of this tragedy calls for unity. I call on every citizen to join hands in supporting government efforts, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply offering a helping hand to your neighbor,” she said.
To bolster recovery efforts, the government plans to collaborate with international partners to secure additional resources and expertise. The commitment to rebuilding a stronger and more resilient Eswatini remains steadfast.
In closing, Dladla expressed her deepest sympathies to those affected and emphasized the government’s dedication to recovery.
“You are not alone. We are with you, and we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that our communities emerge from this tragedy stronger than ever, ” she said.
