GREEN GROWTH AS UN PROGRAMME OFFERS ENERGY SOLUTIONS FOR MSMEs

MBABANE – The United Nations has launched a call for expressions of interest for a new programme aimed at helping Micro and Small Business Enterprises (MSMEs) in Eswatini reduce energy costs, grow their businesses, and create jobs through renewable energy.

 The initiative, which is part of a joint programme by UNDP and WFP, was announced ahead of the 8 August 2025 application deadline and targets registered MSMEs that rely on energy for production.

The programme called “Igniting Eswatini’s Green Engine – Empowering MSMEs Towards a Sustainable Future,”  is a joint programme supported by the SDG Fund and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Food Programme (WFP), with coordination by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO).

The programme is calling for expressions of interest from eligible MSMEs who want to cut energy costs, grow their businesses, and create jobs by integrating sustainable energy solutions. Participants stand to benefit from:

  • Access to renewable and/or energy-efficient technologies
  • An expert analysis of their current energy usage and associated costs
  • Training in energy management and efficiency
  • Business guidance on adopting circular economy practices

To qualify, businesses must meet the following criteria:

  • Have an annual turnover between E6,000 and E3 million
  • Use some form of energy in their production processes (e.g. electricity, gas, wood)
  • Be registered in Eswatini or have a valid trading license
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain financial records
  • Show a clear strategy for reinvesting energy savings into business growth
  • Operate from a standalone or commercial premises, including backyard setups

Completed forms should be sent via email to registry.sz@undp.org or physically dropped off at the UNDP Offices at UN House in Mbabane or any SECO office across the country.

This initiative forms part of broader UN efforts to support Eswatini’s economic development while promoting environmental sustainability in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
